JAMAICA WHEELCHAIR PROJECT

CALENDAR YEAR: 2023

PROJECT TYPE:  International

PROJECT START DATE:   06-30-2023

PROJECT END DATE:   07-07-2023

Background/History of Project:

The Wheelchair Foundation was founded in 2000 by by real estate developer Ken Behring, and based in Danville, California. It is a 501(c3) Foundation with a goal to provide a free wheelchair to every child, teen and adult who needs one but has no means to acquire one.  Rotary Clubs world-wide partner with The Wheelchair Foundation to bring their mission to the world.

Project Overview:

This year Chatham Rotary Club was represented by one of our own, as he journeyed to Jamaica to help with the distribution of wheelchairs.  Along with help of Rotary Clubs from around the globe, the Wheelchair Foundation has been able to deliver more than 895,000 wheelchairs worldwide. A wheelchair distribution is a hands-on Rotary project. Together, we’ve changed hundreds of thousands of lives with the gift of mobility — changing the lives of not only the recipients of these wheelchairs, but the families, and their communities, putting smiles and tears of joy on many faces!

Impact Statement:

Our District 7570 Wheelchair project has set a goal for delivering a container of wheelchairs (280) each year to a developing country in our hemisphere.  The overall impact is nothing short of monumental for those people in need of mobility, but who cannot afford a wheelchair.  The number of people with lower body extremity loss is staggering in developing countries but with Chatham Rotary Club's District partnership, we’ve helped change hundreds of lives with the gift of mobility.  This year our teams built the wheelchairs, transported and provided them to those in need in during several stops in Jamaica.  Seeing the poor living situations these people were in, with family members and caretakers who were desperate to get their loved ones to the distribution location by any means available, tore at the hearts of every Rotarian that worked on the project.  The recipients and their families were so excited and thankful to receive the wheelchairs; it certainly gave us the impetus to continue supporting this valuable ministry to the less fortunate around the world.
