Pittsylvania County Pet Center: DOG PARK PROJECT

YEAR:  2018
APPROXIMATE DONATION VALUE: $8,000
Chatham Rotary raised $4,000 for this project, and a Matching Grant from the Rotary Foundation for $4,000.

PROJECT OVERVIEW

Pittsylvania County’s first dog park opened August 9, 2018, delighting animal lovers and wagging tails alike!

This dog park is the first of its kind in the county.  The park sets beside the Pittsylvania Pet Center at 11880 US 29 in Chatham. It has a side for small dogs under 40 pounds and a side for large dogs 40 pounds and over. Amenities include a Fido fountain to keep your pet hydrated as well as benches and a large umbrella for shade. Each side also has a retired fire hydrant in the center. Hours of operation are dawn to dusk.

The project was $35,000 total, but no tax payer money was needed. The Chatham Rotary Club, Community Foundation of the Dan River Region, and the sale of bricks at the pet center funded the dog park.

IMPACT STATEMENT

Wagging tails are the proof of happy dogs that enjoy running and playing freely, alone and with other dogs.  This dog park is not only meant for pet parents to bring their dogs to. It also provides an opportunity for pet shelters to engage with the public and introduce them to dogs for adoption. When someone is considering adopting a pet, it's a real advantage for them to be able to take the dog outside to play.  In addition, if they have other pets, it provides a place to introduce them to the new family member.
